Our plays are selected by the Play Reading Committee, all of whose members are on the Fantasy Board. This Committee is in charge of finding the scripts and directors for a full season or a slate. The slate is then presented at the January board meeting for full board approval.

The committee starts by attempting to achieve a “balanced” season. Do we have something for the intermediate and primary grades? Something that appeals to all age groups? Is the season gender balanced? Do we have a contemporary play? A classic? A fairy tale? Are there any significant events we need to celebrate?

We are now incorporating a post show survey, this will allow us to better understand what our audience likes. Whether a script was a success or should not be attempted again. We are aiming to make audience feedback an essential part of the production choosing process.

Sometime we are influenced by a script. When we find a script that is particularly good we will try to find a director to fit it.

Sometimes we are influenced by a colleague. When a director comes to us with a concept a script we feel we can get behind, and would be a good fit to our organization we will try to find a way to get it into our season.

Sometimes a writer comes to us with a concept for a play. Or a finished script. When the script is complete we will always review it a determine if it is right for our organization.

But it almost always comes down to this :
Is the script good, and is it a good match for this director?
Is this production within our means and resources to produce?
Could this production offer something creatively unique to the table?
Have we done this story too often, or too recently?
Is this production even available to us?
Lastly, does at least 2/3 of the committee agree that this director and this production should become a part of our season?

How can I become a director?

You’re interested in directing with us? GREAT! Here is how it works.

First understand that we are an all Volunteer organization. This means our directors do not get paid in anything other than the joy of the creative process and the beauty of seeing their vision come to life.

Second, we vet our directors as assistant directors first. We like to get a feel for how they work, and what their strengths are. Assistant Directing gives us a great insight into what kind of a director you will be. We will help you find a current director to work with if you need us to. We are always interested in seeking out new talent.

If you agree to the above, then all you have to do is email the chair of the Play Reading committee (playselection at letthemagicbegin.org) ! And we’ll start working with you towards getting your visions onto the stage.
